For 2006 season friendly match reports

It's the Juice and Loose Show!

A (mainly) young side took the field against Caerphilly Druids in this friendly at Burnham Avenue (the average age was raised considerably by the presence of Piehead, Brucey and Mick 'out for duck again' Fisher).  Centurions fielded first and skipper Dave Sylvester took the opportunity to give plenty of the young bowlers a chance to impress.  Daniel Chaulk and Lewis Cuddihy opened and both took wickets, but the Druids were beginning to put a few runs on the board by the time the slowies came on. Ben Callow bowled a nice spell as did Shae Ellis and Lloyd Bruce.  Guru Patel also chipped in with a few late overs, but the star was Owain 'Loose' Sullivan, who took four wickets in his 7 over spell, as well as hanging on to 4 catches in the field. This helped to keep the Druids'total down to 169 all out.

After tea (thank you Suzie) Loose was again centre stage as he hit a quickfire 12 (three 4s) before departing.  Enter Brucie senior who proceded to put the opposition attack to the sword - supported first by Shae Ellis, who hit a nice 25 and later on by Adam Gilliatt (22).  Juice was 76 not out at the end, but it was left to Daniel Chaulk to hit the winning runs - Centurions were victorious by 3 wickets.

Sully 172/7  Caerphilly Druids 169 all out

Dream is Over at St Helen's

Swansea ended our Cockspur Cup run win a 9 wicket victory in a pretty one sided affair at St Helen's.   The day did not start well because the coach didn't turn up, so cars were the order of the day - then there was a massive traffic hold-up.

Centurions batted first and never got going against an accurate home attack.

Jamie Sylvester, showing extreme patience, batting 33 overs for 39 runs and James Langworth with 21, were the only players to show any real resistance as Centurions were all out for 129.

Swansea reached the target in just 25 overs for the loss of just 1 wicket.

Into the Semi Finals

Centurions progressed into the regional semi finals of the Cockspur Cup with an emphatic win over St Fagans at Burnham Avenue. Click Here for details on the 'Play Cricket' site

Batting first, Sully made an excellent start and 86 runs were added by the tried and tested opening partnership of Jamie and Ryan Sylvester.

With Ryan looking in excellent form he was caught for yet another half century but a mini collapse saw Centurions lose 3 wickets for the addition of just 41 runs.

Cometh the hour cometh the men - Tom Evison and Andrew Davies who both gave a superb display of batting and intelligent cricket. Davies was the aggressor with a magnificent 83 not out and Evison hit a controlled 56 to add 134 runs and take the team to a formidable 261 at the end of their 45 overs.

St Fagans reply got off to a poor start as Andrew Davies bowled a fantastic spell of 9 overs for just 6 runs. Two wickets fell by the time the score reached 20 and although Merrilatt with 35 and Salmons 41 added 85 for the third wicket the run rate was well behind the asking rate.

Ar 105 Centurions took full control of the match and St Fagans were reduced to 141-8, Tom Evison having a great day as he claimed 4 wickets.

A late flurry from Williams 45 and Slade 37 made no difference to the result as Centurions strolled to an emphatic victory.

Centurions 261/5. St Fagans 222 all out.

The Regional Semi Final is away at Swansea on 22nd June - It's getting interesting!!

Huge win at Corsham!

A busload of Centurions and supporters set off from the 3 Horseshoes on Sunday to travel to Corsham for the Cockspur Cup 2nd Round match.  The Wiltshire side won the toss and put Sully in - a decision that would come back to haunt them!

The Sylvester brothers proceded to take the home attack apart with Ryan as usual being the aggressor.  The ball was lost over nearby garden walls no fewer than 5 times as Ryan piled up the runs - and by the time Jamie was out for a well crafted 70 the partnership was worth 284.  Ryan continued to smash the ball to all corners and reached 245 before being run out.  His standing ovation was well earned, this being one of the best innings' he will have ever produced.  It contained no fewer than 15 sixes and very few, if any, chances.

Following Ryan's departure Lloyd Smith (46 not out) and James Langworth (15)continued the assault, both hitting sixes as the total crept up towards the magical 400.  Only some last over wickets, as the Centurions batsmen threw the bat at everything, gave the home bowling figures anything like respectability - the final score of 407 for 5 was well deserved.

After tea the home batsmen were dispatched back to the pavillion at regular intervals a s the bowlers carried on the work - wickets for Andrew Davies (1) Terry Williams (2) David Eskins (2) Tom Evison (2) and three for Jamie Sylvester sent the Corsham team out of the competition with a final score of 129 all out.

The celebrations stareted immediately and continued on the coach home. By the time the 3 Horseshoes had been reached the party was in full swing.  The next round is at home and our old friends St Fagans are the opponents.

Corsham 129 all out  Sully 407 for 5

Centurions Teach Academy a Lesson!

The second friendly of the season at Burnham Avenue was a low scoring affair, in which Centurions beat Glamorgan Academy by 28 runs.  Batting first, Sully lost the early wicket of Jamie Sylvester with only 13 runs on the board.  Ryan Sylvester put on 20 for the second wicket with Lloyd Smith and had hit 23 when he fell to Evans with the score on 33.  Lloyd and James Langworth then shared a stand of 84 before Langers went for 25.

Lloyd continued to find the boundary and was eventually bowled out for a well taken 55.  Then a massive collapse followed, with 4 wickets going down for only 4 runs.  At 128 for 8, Shae Ellis and Huw Williams came together and began to get the innings going again. The final score was 156 for 9 off the allotted 45 overs.

The Academy innings was a mirror of the Sully one, with runs being hard to come by on the slow wicket.  Early wickets left the visitors on 32 for 3.  Skipper Ryan Sylvester bagged a couple and Terry Williams picked up 1 for 29 off his nine overs.  Only Hussain (36) and Roberts (42) had anything like decent scores as the youngsters struggled to find a way through the Centurions' attack.  A loss of three wickets for only 2 runs didn't help the cause, with Tom Evison collecting 4 victims for just 21 runs off his 8.4 overs.

The Academy slumped to a final score of 128 all out - well short of the Centurion score.

Next week the league season starts - with the firsts at home to Newport (last year's runners up)  and the seconds visiting Newport 2nds in the reverse fixture.

Centurions Start With a Win

On a sunny but cold April day Centurions got the 2008 season off to a winning start against South Wales Cricket Association side Swansea - which included former Glamorgan and Essex pace bowler Darren Thomas.  Centurions won by eight wickets.

Swansea batted first on a predictable slow wicket and found runs very hard to come by against Centurions new opening attack - former Glamorgan pace bowler Andrew Davies and Steve Hood (newly signed Pentyrch)  both making their debuts.

Davies produced a superb spell taking three wickets for just eight runs off six overs with Hood giving him full support. A fine 52 by Payne was the highlight of the Swansea innings with Darren Thomas 21 and Hayden 24 being the only other two batsmen to reach double figures in a total of 143 for 8 at the end of their allocated 45 overs.

Wickets were shared as Centurions skipper Ryan Sylvester used eight bowlers, with Aeron Smith grabbing two wickets at the end of the Swansea innings.

Centurions although losing the early wicket of Jamie Sylvester had very little trouble in reaching the target passing the Swansea total in just 26.3 overs as some very early season bowling was dealt harshly by both Ryan Sylvester (55) and Lloyd Smith - 65 not out.

SCORES Swansea 143 for 8: (M Payne 52, G Hayden 24, D Thomas 21, A Davies 3 for 8, A Smith 2 for 17).

Centurions 144 for 2: (L Smith 65 not out, R Sylvester 55.)
