A Banana Skin Avoided !!
The 1st XI were severely tested by a dogged Rogerstone side in this tense match at Sully. The visitors batted first and were seemingly on the verge of being rolled over when they were 26 for 2, thanks to some fine opening bowling from Ryan Sylvester and Adam Davies. However, a 3rd wicket stand of 80 (including a half century from Harris) gave Rogerstone some hope . When spin was introduced Tom Evison and Jamie Sylvester (with 4 wickets) cut through the batting and the Rogerstone side slumped to 171 for 9. The final wicket, which would have ensured a 5th bowling point, was left intact at the end of the 50 overs.
After an absolutely sumptious feast at tea time (!) Ryan Sylvester and Gareth Sullivan went out to get the innings underway. Ryan had reached 4 when he chopped one onto his stumps and was followed by Gareth, who was bowled soon after for 5. Rogerstone took heart from these early breakthroughs and stuck to their task very well. It wasn't a vintage batting display by Centurions, as it seemed that just as each batsman got comfortable a wicket would fall. The most bizarre wicket was that of James Langworth, who confidently left one that turned and bowled him. Maybe minds were on the FA Cup Final in Cardiff, but whatever it was, the wickets kept falling. Owain Lovering hung around for a while, but in spite of showing some good touches with the bat, was back in the hutch for a score of 11. It seemed that Tom Evison and David Eskins would see us home, but both were caught after looking comfortable. Tom top scored with 53. It was left to Jamie Sylvester - batting down the order - and Adam Davies to steer the ship home. Wasp's celebrations after hitting the winning run was reminiscent of Kevin Pieterson at Lord's the previous day!

Job Done!
The rearranged Welsh Cup match against Blackwood ended in an emphatic victory for Centurions, in spite of taking the field without 3 regular 1st team players (David Eskins, Jamie Sylvester and Tom Evison). Stand in skipper Ryan Sylvester opened in explosive style and was in double figures in no time. Ryan eventually went for 41. Mike Newbold then continued on his merry way, ably assisted by Owain Lovering who joined him in a 4th wicket stand of 116 before Owain went for a very good 47, followed quickly by Mike who had reached 88 by this time. This left us at 211 for 5 - Some hefty whacks from Terry Williams (7) and Sam Docherty (14) brought the score up to 239 for 7 at the close of the innings.
Adam Davies and Nathan Gage opened the bowling for Sully and their accuracy and, in Waspy's case, sheer pace, brought great rewards. After 12 overs Blackwood were 41 for 3 and looking around for some inspiration. Wasp finished with the impressive figures of 4 for 12 off 7 overs. Nathan bowled 9 overs for a return of 3 for 43. Only Willcock (32 not out) showed any real resistance as the visitors' wickets began to tumble.
Ryan notched up a couple of victims in his 6 over spell (2 for 21) and David Goodway came late to the party but managed to pick up the last wicket to end with figures of 1 for 14.
Final Score: Sully 238/7 Blackwood 143 ao

Victory at the Island
The 1sts travelled down the road to Barry Island and ran out comfortable winners in this 1st Division clash against Barry Athletic. Missing several players due to work and other commitments, the team dug deep to turn in another match winning performance. Pride of place went to Ryan Sylvester who chalked up another ton (his first in the league this year) as Centurions posted a total of 244 for 2. Able support was given by Mike Newbold, who scored 85
In reply Barry were never at the races and with all of the bowlers chipping in to share the wickets they were 112 for 9 at the end of the 50 overs. So, Centurions remain leaders of the table, still unbeaten.

No Sucker Punch for Centurions!
The Village Cup brought Ynsytawe to Burnham Avenue and the game produced fireworks! Batting first on a glorious sunny afternoon, Centurions survived the loss of skipper Jamie Sylvester and in-form Mike Newbold to rattle up 222 for 5 after the allotted 40 overs. Top man again was Ryan Sylvester, who smashed yet another century. His 116 was full of swashbuckling shots, including one huge 6 that landed on the beach, to bring up the three figures. Tom Evison (34) and Nathan Gage (a quickfire 40) along with Owain Lovering, pushed the score along at the end.
After tea Ynystawe slumped from 99 for 3 to 137 all out. Jamie made up for his early dismissal by taking 4 for 22. Tom Evison got 3 for 19. The other wicket takers were Gareth Sullivan (2) and Terry Williams. Even Quimby got in on the act by taking a difficult catch at the death!
This means that we are now in the regional final: The dream is alive again!
10/6/06
Another Huge Win
The 1st XI kept up the momentum at the top of the First Division with a huge win over Malpas. A century for skipper Jamie Sylvester (131 not out) and half centuries for Mike Newbold (72) and Tom Evison (79 not out) were the main contributions in this one-sided affair, as Centurions rattled up 318 for 2 in the 50 overs.
Terry Williams was the main man in the bowling department, taking three wickets as the visitors were restricted to 221 for 8 in reply. This consolidates Centurions as unbeaten league leaders and, on this form, it is going to take a superhuman effort by the chasing pack to catch us.
16/6/06
Gareth and Julian Pull it Out of the Bag!
In a remarkable game at Hoovers, the 1st XI were tested by a game home side and nearly fell at the last hurdle. With 3rd XI regulars Dave Fiddler and Owain Sullivan standing in for Dave Eskins and Adam Davies and new boy Julian Griffiths playing only his 3rd match, we were a little under strength, but still managed to restrict Hoovers to 190 for 9 after the 50 overs with the bowling honours shared around.
The Sully innings never really gathered any momentum and the normally reliable top order batsmen were restricted to low scores. It was left to Julian Griffiths (37) and Gareth Sullivan to get us back on track. Gareth hit the winning runs - finishing with a six with 3 balls to spare.
We made it, but it was a close thing.
17/6/06
Village Cup Victory - But We're Run Close!
The Village Cup Regional Final against Miskin Manor proved to be a close run affair - for the second time in two days Centurions had to dig deep in order to emerge victorious.
Ryan Sylvester hit a whirlwind 42 before departing, followed by Jamie for just 14, but half centuries from Tom Evison and Mike Newbold, supported by 26 from Nathan Gage, gave us a competetive 226 for 4 at the end of the 40th over.
Miskin started their innings in a hurry and were soon well in front of the required run rate - it took a superb run out from Owain Lovering to get things going. However, Miskin stuck manfully to their task and it took a great Mike Newbold catch off the bowling of Jamie Sylvester and an almost identical wicket from Tom Evison to slow down the momentum - also worthy of a mention was Terry Williams, whose accurate spell really put the brakes on the visitors' progress. Suddenly Miskin were looking for 26 off the final over, which ended with a fabulous Eskins catch on the boundary to leave the visitors on 210 for 6 at the end.
We now progress into the UK stage with the next round coming in two weeks time.

Another Close Thing As Miskin Give it Their All Again!
After the Village Cup match last week, we again hosted Miskin Manor, this time in the league and once again the visitors gave a good account of themselves, pushing the 1st XI close for much of this game.
The visitors batted first and managed a decent score of 246 for 5 after their 50 overs, with Treharne top scoring with 52. With Adam Davies out injured the bowling was shared out a bit more than usual. Ryan Sylvester posted figures of 2 for 59 and brother Jamie got 2 for 38.
In reply Ryan and Tom Evison both scored 63 as Centurions reached 247 for 6 to win in the 49th over.

Bridgend Fight Hard, But Centurions Too Strong
The 1st XI travelled to Bridgend and set about the home attack with some enthusiasm. There was a certain inevitability about another century for Ryan Sylvester, as he crashed the ball to the boundary with some relish, finishing on 107. Good supporting work from James Langworth (58*) Jamie Sylvester (88) and others saw a huge 307 for 5 totalled at the end of the 50 overs.
Bridgend gave it a go and scored 232 in reply, but it wasn't enough to stop Centurions' 100% record at the top opf Division One. Top bowling honours went to Tom Evison with 5 for 52.

The Dream is Over
A disastrous batting collapse saw Centurions slump from 140 for 3 to 200 all out chasing 209 against Cornish side Paul CC. The Lord's dream is over.

Skipper Leads The Way
Jamie Sylvester turned in a real captain's performance with the ball as Centurions beat Radyr by 4 wickets at Burnham Avenue to remain proudly unbeaten at the top of Division One of the South Wales League.
The Sully innings got off to a poor start and the score was 12 for 2 in no time at all. But the team dug deep and a half century from Mike Newbold put the innings back on track. Good support from James Langworth (20) and Gareth Sullivan (25) kept the momentum going, but the highlight of the innings was a stand of 75 between Dave Eskins (54 not out) and Adam Davies (20 not out) which helped the score along to 199 for 6 after the 50 overs. This would normally be considered a low score at Sully, but the conditions were not conducive to batting and it proved more than enough to see off the Radyr challenge.
It was not a fast bowler's wicket either and Adam Davies toiled away manfully without much reward. However, the visitors were all at sea on 8 for 3 until a 4th wicket stand of 69 gave them some hope. Enter Jamie with a remarkable spell of 6 for 24 which completely destroyed the Radyr batting - only Stone (52) offered any resistance as they collapsed to 126 all out.

A Stroll in the Park for Centurions
The 1st XI visited Rogerstone and once again proved too powerful for their opponents.
The home side batted first and never got to grips with the Sully attack, with Jamie Sylvester again in fine form to post figures of 4 for 7. Julian Griffiths also bowled very well for his 3 for 23 as Rogerstone slumped to 66 all out.
In reply Centurions reached the target in only the 9th over - Tom Evison hit a whirlwind unbeaten 53 out of the total of 67 for 1.
After the game a hungry (and thirsty!) crowd turned up at Ryan's barbeque, where we all had great fun playing a game of 'hunt the gas bottle'.
22nd July 2006
The Machine Grinds On!
The home fixture against Pontypridd proved to be yet another case of 'one way traffic' as Centurions notched up another win to maintain their 100% record and stay well in front at the top of Division One.
The Sully batsmen were soon on top with Ryan Sylvester hitting another half century and James Langworth getting 71, with significant contributions coming from Gareth Sullivan (41) and Owain Lovering (28 not out) in the final total of 266 for 5 after 50 overs.
The visitors made a decent start and had reached 70 for 1 before it all began to unravel. Adam Davies bowled an economical spell of 1 for 28 and was extremely unlucky not to have had more wickets, as the Pontypridd openers were playing and missing a great deal. Julian Griffiths also picked up a wicket (1 for 25) but the Centurion spinners were the stars - Tom Evison ended with 3 for 23 and Jamie Sylvester showed his class with a wonderful display of bowling to post figures of 5 for 15 as Pontypridd ended on 136 all out.
Incidentally, the young and old were on display, with Dave Fiddler (a late replacement for Dave Eskins) showing his prowess in the field! Also, 13 year old Richard Lovering was given a chance to show his potential and bowled a tight 3 over spell at the end.
29th July 2006 100% Record Intact
The 1sts beat local rivals Barry Athletic to maintain their unbeaten record.
Batting first Centurions suffered the loss of skipper Jamie Sylvester for a duck and the wicket of brother Ryan for 29. However, like so many times before, the opposition were reminded that there is more to the side than the opening pair and James Langworth (51) and Tom Evison (32) pushed things along before Langers was out. Then a middle order collapse left us looking for at least one more partnership to give the score some respectability. This was supplied by Mike Newbold (74 not out) and the evergreen Dave Fiddler who hit 17 in a stand of 76 to leave the score on 232/7 after the allotted 50 overs.
In response, the Barry side were never allowed to get on top by the Sully bowlers – with Tom Evison grabbing 5 for 34 and Jamie Sylvester 3 for 45. Then a late half century partnership from Hopkins and Jones gave the visitors some grain of hope, but they ended on 157 for 8.

Champions and 50 Scalps for Jamie!
The 1sts secured the 1st Division championship with an emphatic 56 run victory over Malpas. This result also means that Malpas are relegated. Centurions made 216 all out with Ryan Sylvester (77) and skipper Jamie (57) leading the way and James Langworth making 24.
Poyner bowled superbly for Malpas with six for 38 and Rose took three for 34 off 15.
Collins hit 53 in the Malpas innings, Martin (24) and Hassan (20) were the other significant scorers, but Tom Evison took four for 22 off 14 overs for Sully and Jamie Sylvester three for 42 off 6.5, taking his season's tally to 51 wickets.

19th August 2006 Ryan Celebrates with a Run or Two!
Ryan Sylvester made an incredible 197 as Centurions demolished Hoovers at Burnham Avenue. The opener hit the visiting attack to all corners in a feast of aggresive cricket at its very best. Brother Jamie made 63 as the runs piled up and when the score was on 319 for 2 the skipper declared with 4 overs remaining.
Jamie then produced bowling figures of 4 for 5 off just 6.1 overs, with Tom Evison getting 3 for 38 off 15. . To complete the celebrations 13 year old Richard Lovering chipped in with two wickets for 18 as the Hoovers innings came to an end at 133 all out.
The 1st XI are itching to get at the rest of the Premier League sides and the message for next year has to be 'catch us if you can!'
Jamie Stars as Centurions Sign Off in Style
The 1st XI rounded off the season with a victory at runners-up Miskin Manor. Skipper Jamie Sylvester scored 88 not out and Dave Eskins got 33 as Centurions reached 201 for six after the 50 overs. Miskin didn't help their cause by giving away 34 extras, including 15 wides and 10 no-balls.
Whitely made 64, Dave 33 and Thomas 27, but Tom Evison captured four for 61 for Sully and Jamie Sylvester took three for 22 off his 10 overs, leaving Miskin all out 27 runs short and ruing their wasteful extras.
29/04/07 So Close!
The Cockspur Cup match at Thornbury was lost by just one wicket. Centurions batted first and were on the receiving end of a couple of dubious lbw decisions (Ryan Sylvester for 22 and Lloyd Smith for 36). The batsmen never quite got going and the wickets kept falling. Of the rest, only Gareth Sullivan (26) and Mike Newbold, making what is likely to be one of very few appearances this year with 21 not out, had significant scores as we were all out for just 178.
The bowling was much better, though, and Tom Evison claimed four victims, ably supported by Jamie Sylvester with 9 miserly overs for only 8 runs. This gave Centurions hope, but a whirlwind 68 from Lylander and 49 from Stovold saw the Bristol side home with just one wicket remaining. Oh well, the Welsh Cup beckons!
28/4/07 Season off to a Flyer
The 2007 league season got underway with a tremendous win at home to Tondu. Batting first on a lovely sunny afternoon, Centurions were indebted to the batting of Mike O'Shea (60) Lloyd Smith (38) and Jamie Sylvester (38) as they stumbled to a pretty low total of 196 all out.
However, the visitors weren't rubbing their hands with glee for long as Jamie ripped into them with figures of 6 for 15. This was supported by 2 wickets for 13 from Terry Williams and one from Tom Evison to skittle Tondu out for a paltry 66. JOB DONE!
6/5/07 Centurions In Stop-Start Victory
This was a game that either side could have won and throughout the afternoon it was impossible to predict the final outcome. Centurions batted first and Ryan and Jamie Sylvester did what they do best - hit the opposition bowling all over the park. Ryan hit 68 and Jamie 63 in a big first wicket stand that looked like setting the platform for a huge score, but Sudbrook hit back with a flurry of wickets, before Centurions managed to put some late order runs on the board to finish on 219 all out.
In reply the home side got away to a good enough start and looked to have done all of the hard work when they too suffered an incredible batting collapse to end on 176 all out. Like Sully, there were a couple of decent individual scores (Peng 81 and Voke 42) but the accuracy of Adam Davies (4/28) along with three wickets each for Mike O’Shea and Jamie Sylvester, meant that the Sudbrook side fell well short of the target.
19th May 2007 The Big Guns Fire at HQ
Centurions racked up a huge score against Newport at Burnham Avenue and maintained their unbeaten start to the season with this winning draw. Ryan Sylvester hit 119 and shared a second wicket stand of 191 with Mike O'Shea, who narrowly missed on a ton, being out on 95. Lloyd Smith joined the party and hit 59 as Sully ended on 330 for 7 after the 50 overs.
The response was predictable. Never in with a chance of winning Newport dropped anchor and batted out for a draw, ending on 180 for 7. The Lion's share of the points went to Sully, of course, but maximum points were missed. Mike O'Shea added to his impressive batting by taking 4 for 27 with the ball.
Sully 330/7 Newport 180/7
26/5/07 Narrow Victory at Sully
The home game against Chepstow was a close affair that Centurions won narrowly after looking like steamrollering the opposition at the halfway stage.
The visitors batted first on a wet afternoon and were soon in all sorts of trouble as Adam Davies (3 for 23) and Ryan Sylvester (3 for 28) ripped into the batting with a vengeance. Only Sellars, with 27, had a reasonable score and with skipper Jamie Sylvester getting 2 for 9 the Chepstow innings came to a close on a mere 117 all out.
Things were looking all too easy for Sully but Chepstow fought back to make Centurions sweat on the outcome. Wickets began to tumble and it took a captain's innings of 56 from Jamie to see Sully home for the loss of 7 wickets

A Breeze at Panteg
The away fixture at Panteg was mostly one way traffic as Centurions ran out victors by 101 runs. Half centuries for Ryan and Jamie Sylvester and Mike O'Shea were the high points in a total of 248 for 6.
The Sully bowling attack soon made an impression on the home batting and the combination of slow left and right arm from Tom Evison and Jamie Sylvester accounted for the majority of the wickets as the Panteg innings came to a ahalt at 147 all out. So, another win and the view from the top of the table is pretty good.

Gymkhana Beaten at a Canter!
Cardiff Gymkhana were the visitors in the Welsh Cup on Sunday. The Conference Div 1 high flyers were brought down to earth by Centurions in a one-sided affair. Gymkhana batted first and were soon under the cosh - Ryan Sylvester was top bowler with 4 for 29, ably backed up by Tom Evison (3/14) and Terry Williams (3/30). In spite of a spirited 40 from Affendi and a battling 29 from Awan, they were bowled out for just 123.
The Centurion response was not all smooth going, as 3 wickets went down, but the target was reached in the 15th over. Lloyd Smith (43) Jamie Sylvester (33) and Ryan Sylvester (23) were the top batsmen.
This victory paves the way for a visit to either Croesyceiliog or St Fagans in the next round.

Lloyd Does The Business
A century from Lloyd Smith was the backbone of this winning draw at home to Pentyrch. Lloyd's 127 was just what was needed after the loss of the Sylvester brothers for very little. Tom Evison (31) gave good support and the innings closed on 238 for 9 after the 50 overs.
The Pentyrch reply was always behind the run rate and with 2 wickets each for Ryan Sylvester, Terry Williams and Adam Davies they slumped to 209 for 9, with the last pair batting sensibly to ensure the draw. Centurions are still sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League.
Centurions 238/9 Pentyrch 209/9
To the Manor Born!
The 1sts, minus some regulars due to holidays and injury, travelled to Miskin Manor on a day when several games fell victim to the weather. Centurions batted first on a pitch that held up well and Ryan and Jamie Sylvester began in their usual style. Jamie was content to play back up to Ryan's bludgeoning of the home attack. Ryan eventually fell to a fine catch on the boundary just 3 runs short of his half century. Last week's century maker, Lloyd Smith, didn't repeat his heroics this time and he fell cheaply as the Miskin bowlers began to frustrate the Sully batsmen. Jamie went for a well crafted 70 and Nathan Gage hit a quick 20 in the relatively low total of 216 for 8.
The Miskin Manor innings got off to the worst possible start when Adam Davies took the opening bat's wicket with the very first ball. The wickets began to fall regularly, with the evergreen Terry Williams taking 3 for 23 and skipper Jamie Sylvester mopping up the tail with 4 for 17. The Centurion bowlers were ably supported by some good fielding, including a superb run out by Huw Williams to dismiss the dangerous Ryan Watkins and a fine tumbling catch inn the deep by Nathan Gage. Miskin ended on just 120 all out.

Cup Run Continues
Cheered on by a sizeable crowd from Sully, the Centurions team made the trip to Croesyceiliog on Sunday for the Welsh Cup 3rd Round match. The home side batted first and were never able to get out of the starting blocks, with the twin slow bowling threat of Jamie Sylvester and Tom Evison accounting for 6 Croesy wickets in a total of 129 all out.
With a rearranged batting order the Sully response got off to a disastrous start with James Langworth ‘s run of bad luck continuing. He was out for a duck, followed by Gareth Sullivan for just 9. Ryan Sylvester and Tom Evison put some stability back into the innings and when Ryan was out for a well taken 49 the score had been pushed on to 89 for 3. Tom Evison continued to shine and his 46 runs were just what were needed as Centurions reached the target for the loss of only 4 wickets.
We now face Panteg at Sully on Sunday 1st July.

Moving Closer to the Title
The 1st XI continued their unbeaten run with this comprehensive victory at Tondu. Batting first Centurions made the most of a slow pitch, which was suffering from all of the recent rain, no doubt.
In a low scoring contest Sully made 182 for 9 in the 50 overs. Skipper Jamie Sylvester made 60 and Mike O'Shea got 25. The rest of the runs were share amongst the team, but confidence was high for the bowling attack.
Two wickets apiece for Jamie, Tom Evison and David Eskins were the main talking points of the Tondu innings as the home side crumbled to 104 all out.

Quick Victory at Sully
The Welsh Cup match against Panteg was a pretty one-sided affair. The visitors batted first and took their time about scoring the runs. Adam Davies and Ryan Sylvester bowled accurate opening spells that kept them on the back foot for a long time, By the time drinks had arrived, after the 25th over, the score was just 51 for 1.
Wasp took two and there were wickets for Jamie Sylvester and Tom Evison, as well as two run outs (one courtesy of a nifty piece of Eskins footwork) as Panteg crawled towards a total of 141 for 6.
The Centurion reply was vintage, with Ryan Sylvester hitting 92 in a total of 142 for 3 in just 20 overs.

Sudbrook Subdued
The 1st XI stretched their unbeaten run by coming out on top against Sudbrook at Burnham Avenue, in spite of the loss of the opening batsmen, the usually reliable Ryan and Jamie Sylvester, for ducks.
Lloyd Smith hit a wonderful unbeaten 130 and Mike O'Shea narrowly missed a century when he was dismissed for a great 96. The total of 245 for 6 was to prove too much for the visitors.
Sudbrook managed to hang on for a losing draw but at 185 for 9 they were definitely second best. Two wickets apiece for Terry Williams, Huw Williams and Tom Evison were the talking points in the Centurion bowling attack.

Victory at Pontyberem
Due to the lousy weather and subsequent double postponement of the Welsh Cup 1/4 Final, a 20 over match was arranged on the Tuesday night. So with several 1st XI players unavailable Centurions travelled down west to face Pontyberem and secured a semi final slot with Gowerton with a victory.

Rain Washes Away Victory Opportunity
The game at home to Cardiff was played under gathering clouds and after a superhuman effort by Donny to clear away the evidence of three escaped horses! The reduced over match saw Centurions posting a total of 189 and then having Cardiff on 90 for 9 but the heavens opened and that was it.
41 Reasons Not to be Complacent!!
The 1sts travelled to Newport and suffered their worst ever Premier League defeat. Batting first Centurions couldn't get going and were skittled out for just 41. Top scorer was Jamie Sylvester with 14.
The home response took only 12 overs to reach the target in a game that is best chalked up to experience and lessons learned. The Welsh Cup semi final against Gowerton will give the players an early opportunity to get back some pride.

Cup Brings Good Cheer!
Centurions breezed through the Welsh Cup Semi Final at the expense of Gowerton and booked a place against Usk in a week's time. Batting first, Sully easily got to 80 when Ryan Sylvester was out for 34 attempting the reverse sweep, having just dispatched the same bowler to the boundary. Jamie Sylvester and Lloyd Smith continued, but when both their wickets and that of James Langworth went down we had slumped to 123 for 4. This brought Nathan Gage and Mike Newbold to the crease and they put on 74 for the fifth wicket, with a fine display of batting. When Digger was out for 30 Mike was joined by David Eskins who continued the heroics. Mike reached his half century soon after and they were still together at the end with the score on 227 for 5.
An accurate opening bowling spell from Adam Davies and Ryan Sylvester kept the West Wales side quiet and wickets began to tumble. Digger, Lloyd and Jamie also picked up wickets and the game was over when they lost the last wicket for 170.
Saturday's bizarre result was put in perspective and the lads are looking forward to the final. Sam (birthday boy) Docherty will have had more than one reason to wake up with a hangover on Monday!!
Lloyd Puts Chepstow to the Sword
Stand in skipper James Langworth had a good day as he led by example in this winning draw at Chepstow. Batting first Centurions rattled up 278 for 3, with Langers getting a long overdue 50. But the true batting star was Lloyd Smith who scored an unbeaten 129.
The home side were never going to reach the target so they dogged it out, making 180 for 7 at the end of the 50 overs. One step nearer the title (and St Fagans lost!)
Chepstow 180/7 Sully 278/3
Centurions Fall at Last Hurdle!
The Welsh Cup Final against Usk at Abergavenny ended in defeat in a game that could have gone either way right up to the last couple of overs.
Batting first Centurions made a reasonable start and after the early loss of Owain Lovering, had got to 51 for 1 when Ryan Sylvester was bowled for 33. This signalled a huge collapse and within a few overs we had slumped to 54 for 5, with the wickets of Lloyd Smith, James Langworth (a very dubious caught behind!) and Gareth Sullivan, who was run out in the most unfortunate manner, when the bowler parried the return ball onto the stumps with Gareth out of his crease. This brought together Mike Newbold and Dave Eskins who did a wonderful repair job, putting on almost 150 for the 6th wicket. Eskins was finally out for 63 and Mike was unbeaten on 76 at the end, with Centurions making a respectable 214 for 9.
The Usk batsmen stuck manfully to their task and were soon ahead of the rate. Then some accurate bowling from Terry Williams and that man Eskins swung the game back to Sully. The wickets were shared out among the bowlers and a nifty run out from Lloyd Smith added to the drama. But Usk gradually got back into it and scored the winning runs with 9 balls remaining.
The double dream is over, but the league is still there for the taking.
Return to Winning Ways
The 1st XI returned to action with this comprehensive victory at Pentyrch. Batting first Centurions reached 251 for 5, thanks in the main to 63 from Mike O’Shea. There were also good performances from Ryan Sylvester (57) Dave Eskins (55*) and Jamie Sylvester (47).
Pentyrch responded well, but they were never really at the races. A fine spell of bowling from Jamie brought him 5 for 17. This was backed up by 2 for 20 from Ryan and 2 for 15 from Huw Williams)
The home side were all out for 123, some 128 runs short of Sully’s total
Bank Holiday Blitz at Sully
The 1st XI entertained Miskin Manor at Burnham Avenue and ended up running away with the match by a huge margin. Centurions batted first and thanks to Lloyd Smith (75) and the welcome return of Tom Evison with 55 not out, posted a total of 243 for 8.
The Miskin innings was a brief affair. Adam Davies, who posted figures of 6 for 37 (including a hat trick) ripped through the visitors' batting and Ryan Sylvester came to the party with 3 for 34. Miskin's innings ended on 73 all out. This thoroughly professional performance means that the title is now easily within touching distance.
CHAMPIONS AGAIN!
The Premier League title was wrapped up in emphatic style at Usk, with this winning draw. Centurions batted first and the runs were shared out, with the main contributions coming from Mike O’Shea (63) Ryan Sylvester (49) Jamie Sylvester (48) and Lloyd Smith (37). The total of 276 for 6 was always going to be a big ask for the home side.
Usk began steadily and reached 103 for 2 before a monumental collapse reduced them to 168-8 at the end of the 50 overs. Only Jones (46) and Kear (22) finished on anything like decent individual scores.
Skipper Jamie Sylvester led from the front with figures of 4 wickets for 16 and Mike O’Shea chipped in with 2 for 23.
The celebrations start here.............
Last Day Defeat, But Party Goes ON!
The 1st XI's season ended on a disappointing note with this narrow defeat at home to St Fagans. In a low scoring match the visitors batted first and managed to reach 190 all out, with Centurions' main bowling successes being Jamie Sylvester (3 for 15) and Mike O’Shea (3 for 23).
Sully's reply was a stuttering one with wickets falling regularly. Jamie Sylvester top scored with 49, but, of the remaining batsmen, only James Langworth (22) and Lloyd Smith (21) posted reasonable scores. The innings ended seven runs short on 183 all out
The celebrations were undiminished, however, with the cake being cut and enjoyed at the Sully Inn after the match

29th April 2006 Gee Stars with Bat and Ball
John Gee starred with bat and ball as the 2nd XI started their first ever Premier League campaign with an emphatic 60 run victory at Miskin Manor. Batting first Centurions got off to a solid start with good contributions from Huw Smith (23) and Sean Davies (36). Nathan Gage, Matthew Thomas, Sam Docherty, Ian Thickpenny (who hit one huge six in his 16) and Herbie Miller all chipped in with decent scores, but a whirlwind 40 from John Gee was the highlight of a very good batting performance. We finished on 242 for 8 at the end of the 50 overs.
Strongbow carried on where he left off when he proceded to take 4 wickets and left the home batting in tatters. Peter Rose grabbed a brace and took a superb catch. Other wickets went to Nathan Gage (2) David Goodway and Thickers. The Miskin response was left floundering and they were all out or 180.
This was a great start to the season and one that the team will now need to build on in the forhcoming matches.

1st May 2006 Quimby Dazzles 'Em As Centurions March On
Following Saturday's inaugural Premier League win the 2nds beat old adversaries Bridgend by 67 runs to continue the winning start to the season. Batting first Centurions managed to get 207 for 7, with Hugh Smith top scoring with 53. David Goodway (37) and Matt Thomas (23*) helped the score along, but, due to some slow scoring (mentioning no names Quimby!) the elusive 5th batting point was not reached.
Quimbers earned his keep by claiming a remarkable 6 victims for 35 runs as the home side were skittled out for just 140. A great start to the season - keep it up boys!

Digger Takes Centre Stage at Sully
Nathan Gage was the man of the match in this convincing win against St Fagans at Burnham Avenue. Centurions' fantastic start to the season continued as the 2nds notched up a third successive victory in some style.
Batting first St Fagans were made to toil for their runs by the accuracy of the home attack. They managed to notch up 228 for 9 at the end of the 50 overs, with the wickets being shared around the bowlers.
The Centurion response was built around Digger's marvellous ton, with David Goodway (35) and Hugh Smith (20) adding support. The target was reached for the loss of only 2 wickets. We have now seen a wonderful start to this first ever Premier League campaign, with 3 wins out of 3.

Back to Business and Another 'Win'
The 2nds resumed league action after 3 weeks of rain and continued where they left off at home to Panteg. On a glorious sunny day they rattled up a total of 261 for 6, with Sean Davies top scoring with 64.
Panteg lost wickets regularly in their response - so their next tactic was to try to shut up shop and eke out a draw. They succeeded in frustrating the Centurion bowlers who couldn't knock over the last two wickets. So we had to be content with a winning draw - which nevertheless gives us 19 points and keeps us at the top of the table.

Centurions Remain Unbeaten at The Top
Nathan Gage hit another century and Gareth Sullivan hit 70 runs in this much anticpiated clash at Newport. Digger and Gareth put on 169 for the second wicket, then when Gareth was out, Sam Docherty added another 40 and Centurions were 254 for 2 at the end of the 50 overs. Digger was unbeaten on 115 at the close of the innings.
In reply, Newport put together some useful partnerships but Centurions' skipper Ian Thickpenny took 6 wickets for just 31 runs to restrict the home side to 226 for 8 at the close of play. Centurions kept up the unbeaten run and had the lion's share of the points in this winning draw.

2nds Slip to First Defeat of Season
The 2nd XI went down at home to neighbours Penarth in a day that winning the toss was crucial. The visitors opted to bat and set a daunting total of 280 for 8. Not many bowlers emerged with any credit as the Penarth batsmen enjoyed themselves in the sunshine. We clearly missed absentees John Gee and Peter Rose.
In reply, the top order, normally so destructive this season, were dismissed cheaply and it was left to Sam Docherty (64) and David Goodway (30) to get the innings going again. After they were out, we were treated to a quickfire 35 from skipper Ian Thickpenny (including a couple of sixes that didn't do much for the nearby greenhouses!) but it was never going to be enough and the innings closed on 203 for 9.
We are still top, but this has been a wake up call.
24th June 2006
Seconds Slip Again
The 2nd XI slipped to their second defeat in a row as the batting collapsed at Chepstow, chasing a relatively low score.
Ian Thickpenny (3 for 35) and Nathan Gage (3 for 25) were the main bowling successes as the home side struggled to get a reasonable score on the board. In the end they were reduced to 229 for 9 after the 50 overs, a total which should have been in the easy range for Centurions.
However, the batting wasn't up to the task and one by one wickets fell, leaving Sully stranded on 147 all out. The highest individual score was Huw Williams, who reached 28. Sean Davies (27) and Matt Thomas (19) were the only other batsmen who managed anything like a reasonable score.
The wheels haven't quite come off, but we've now slipped to 2nd place behind Usk, so that should give us some incentive to get back to winning ways next week.

Bowling Not Up to The Job at Sully
The 2nds entertained Abergavenny at Burnham Avenue and, thanks to some good scores from Nathan Gage (century) Sam Docherty (40) and David Goodway (44) posted a highly competitive 259 for 5 form the 50 overs.
However, the bowling, with the notable exception of John Gee, was short of the required standard and the visitors reached the target for the loss of only 2 wickets, with 6 overs remaining. That excellent start to the season is beginning to look like a distant memory!

Seconds Lose Out By 6 Runs
The 2nd XI visited St Fagans and came off worst by just six runs in this losing draw in the Premier League. The home side batted first and were restricted to 202 for 8 by the Sully bowlers. Nathan Gage (1 for 29) and Julian Griffiths (2 for 38) bowled well, but the best bowling was undoubtedly from John Gee who posted figures of 2 for 8 off ten overs, with no fewer than 5 maidens.
The Sully innings got off to a solid start with 20 from Sean Davies and 21 from Nathan Gage. Julian Griffiths played a superb innings to end with 72 not out as Centurions closed in on the target. Some big hitting from skipper Ian Thickpenny (16) helped to get Sully within touching distance of the target but the overs ran out with the score on 194 for 4. This was a much improved performance from last week and perhaps some luck next time will see the side back to its early season winning ways.

Digger's Day at Sully
Nathan Gage hit a marvellous 150 as the 2nds racked up a huge score of 324 for 3 against Pentyrch at Burnham Avenue. Also getting in on the act was Shaz Naeem, with 80.
On a very hot day the wicket played well and the batsmen took full advantage of the conditions to pile on the runs for the loss of only three wickets.
The Pentyrch reply was slow getting going, but the batsmen got to grips with the job and soon began mounting a challenge to the huge total. However, as the overs ticked on it became crystal clear that the visitors were not going to get anywhere near the target and they shut up shop - dogging it out for a draw - however, with Sully taking the lion's share of the points, it was a victory in every other respect.

99 for Nathan!
The 2nds continued their revival with a close fought victory at Cardiff. Nathan Gage and David Goodway shared a stand of 87 at the start, but a middle order stumble left the score at 169 for 6. Digger was eventually out just one short of a century, but this was a great score in pretty difficult conditions. A late flurry of runs, including a typically cavalier 28 not out from John Gee, pushed the total to 237 at the close.
John continued the good work by taking 3 Cardiff wickets, a feat also emulated by David Goodway and Lewis Cosslett, as Centurions dismissed the home side for 200 to claim the points as winners.
This now leaves the table wide open at the top.

2nds Slip Up
The 2nds recent run of good form came to an end when they lost to Panteg.
Nathan Gage and Shaz Naeem shared an opening stand of 113 before Digger was out for 53. Sean Davies added 20 and Shaz was out just one run short of his half-century. Then a collapse of middle and late order meant that the final score was 191 all out – quite a way short of what was expected after such a great start.
The Panteg innings got off to a poor start when Sean Davies caught opener Hazard for one run off the bowling of Peter ‘Able Seaman’ Rose, but the target was reached for the loss of just four wickets. Zimbo was the pick of the Centurions’ bowlers with 2 for 56.
26th August 2006
Fine Win at Sully
The 2nds kept up the pressure at the top of the Premier League with a win over Chepstow at Burnham Avenue. The visitors batted first and soon fell under the spell of Sean 'Monty' Davies, who spun his magical web to finish with figures of 3 for 27 off 8 overs. Sterling support from Peter Rose (2 for 23) David Goodway (1/33) and Digger Gage (1/13) kept the Chepstow score down to 151 for7 at the end of the innings.
After losing a couple of early wickets Centurions got the job done - Shaz Naeem top scored with 56 not out and Digger chipped in with 26 as the target was reached with plenty of overs to spare.
19th August 2006 Back to Winning Ways
The 2nd XI entertained Newport at Burnham Avenue and had the better part of this winning 'draw'. Batting first, Centurions had a great start with Shaz Naeem and Nathan Gage sharing a 52 run partnership. Following Shaz's departure David Goodway played a solid innings that allowed a succession of partners to play their shots while he kept the other end secure. Digger reached another half century and Sam Docherty injected some urgency into the proceedings with a nice 41 before Quimby was finally out for 63. The score was 223 for 8 when the innings closed. A reasonable score but still within reach of the visitors.
Johnny Gee bowled a miserly spell and ended with figures of 0 for 29. Quimby bowled well for his 2 for 39. Lewis Cosslett and Huw Williams picked up a wicket each before skipper Ian Thickpenny chipped in with 2 for 11. The last wicket was to prove to be elusive, though, and the game ended with Newport on 200 for 9. Maximum points were missed, but it was a nice return to winning ways after last week's setback.
Bank Holiday Fun!
The August Bank Holiday match saw the 2nd XI hosting Bridgend 2nds and it proved to be a real holiday for Centurions as a score of 258 for 7 was achieved before the visitors were skittled out for just 129. The final matches should prove to be interesting, as there is still an outside chance of the title, or, if not, the runners up spot.
Runners Up Spot Caps Great 1st Season in Top Flight
9th September 2006
The 2nd XI secured the runners up spot in their first season in the Premier League by beating Abergavenny by a massive 180 runs.
Batting first, David Good way and Sean Davies put on 94 for the first wicket (Davies, 39) before Gareth Sullivan came in and hit an entertaining 66 in a 2nd wicket century partnership. With David Goodway holding the end up, Gareth Thomas (38) and Huw Williams (24) pushed the score along. Unfortunately that first 100 still remains elusive for David, as he was out on 94, in a total of 294 for 7.
The home side's response was never adequate and they were skittled out for a meagre 114 runs. Lewis Cosslett was the top wicket taker with 3 for 15, with two apiece for Don Sylvester (2/10), David Goodway (2/14) and John Gee (2/20).
This was a fantastic way to end the season, with 2nd place being a just reward for all the efforts of the team over the season.
28/4/07
Good Start at Tondu
The 2nd XI began the 2007 with a bang at Tondu when they rattled up an impressive 311 all out on a hot afternoon. Hughie Smith hit 77, ably supported by Matthew Thomas (42) and Sam Docherty (35).
The home wickets tumbled to the bowling of Aaron Smith (3 for 41) and John Gee (2 for 32) but although David Good way bowled well to restrict the runs, the final wicket proved elsuive. The total of 185 for 9 meant the lion's share of the points went to Centurions, but the maximum was missed. Still, it was a good start to the year and showed that nothing can be taken for granted.
Victory at Burnham Avenue
The opening home game of the season saw visitors Sudbrook well beaten by a bouyant 2nd XI. Sully batted first and lost the normally reliable Nathan Gage for just one. Hugh Smith followed last week's half century with a knock of 17. But the big scores came from wicket keeper Sam Docherty and Matthew Thomas who hit 60 and 70 respectively to lead Centurions to maximum batting points and a total of 285 for 8 at the end of the 50 overs.
Sudbrook seconds never really got going as wickets began to tumble regularly. Nathan Gage made up for his disappointment with the bat by taking three wickets for 20. Huw Williams also picked up three and young Shae Ellis marked his 2nd XI debut by bagging a pair of late wickets. Only Pitman and Adams, who both reached 32, had scores of any significance in the final total of 195 all out.
Bank Holiday Whitewash
The Bank Holiday game at Abergavenny was a one sided affair, with Centurions taking no time at all in registering a victory, with Gareth Sullivan ending with the amazing figures of 7 for 25. Only Lamont in the Abergavenny side had any success with the bat, scoring a defiant 60 as the hosts crashed to 113 all out.
Hugh Smith (58*) and Nathan Gage (47*) ensured victory for Sully by the margin of 10 wickets. The game was all over by 5.00pm
26/5/07 2nds Crash at Newport
The 2nd XI traveled to Newport with a weakened side due to the unavailability of several key players. Batting first, they managed to last the 50 overs and reached a total of 183 for 9. Huw Williams showed some sticking power and was rewarded with a half century, eventually being out for 51.
This total was never going to be enough and Newport reached the target for the loss of only 4 wickets with plenty of overs to spare. This was the first defeat of the season and leaves us currently in 3rd position in the league
Newport 188/4 Sully 183/9
Job Done!
After last week's setback the 2nds returned to winning ways with a convincing 5 wicket win against Panteg at Burnham Avenue.
The visitors batted first and were restricted to just 159 all out, with a combination of Nathan Gage (4 for 22) and Shae Ellis (4 for 24) accounting for the majority of the wickets. Young Shae has taken his chance extremely well and has more than justified his selection for the 2nd XI this year.
The Centurions response was to get off to a flyer with Digger hitting 50, ably supported by Hugh Smith (33) and Matthew Thomas (25). The target was duly reached with plenty of overs to spare.

Close Call at Penarth
The 2nd XI traveled up the road to Penarth and ran up a good score of 289 for 4. A 90 from Nathan Gage was the high spot of the Centurions batting, ably supported by half centuries from Sam Docherty and Hugh Smith.
When the home team batted they gave it their all and came close to reaching the target. However they had only reached 275 for the loss of 9 wickets by the end of the alloted 50 overs. 14 year old Shae Ellis had another good week with the ball, returning figures of 3 for 38. The match ended in a winning draw for Centurions, who gathered in 18 points and remain in 3rd place in the table.

No Joy At Usk
The 2nds visited Usk in one of the only games to beat the weather and they probably ended up wishing that it had been rained off as well. Batting first Centurions were limited to 175 for the loss of 8 wickets. David Goodway was the pick of the batsmen with a Donnyesque 60 not out - within the context of the game this was a very good score indeed - in fact it was the highest score from either team.
The home side's reply wasn't without a few hiccups, but Roderick (54) Watkins (51) and Robinson (40) were the top Usk scorers as they reached the total for the loss of just 4 wickets.

Tondu Toppled
The 2nds beat Tondu at Burnham Avenue in a match that was a true team effort.
The visitors batted first and were reduced to 174 all out, thanks to 4 wickets from Huw Williams, with 2 each for David Goodway and young Darren Johnson.
In reply, David Goodway and Sean Davies got 41 not out and 40 respectively, ably supported by Sam Docherty (29*) and Hugh Smith (24) in a total of 175 for 2.

Nightmare at Sudbrook
The 2nds' trip to Sudbrook ended in them being on the wrong end of a losing draw. The home side batted first and were in trouble at 17 for 2, but a stand of 70 for the 3rd wicket helped them to gain the upper hand. Wicket keeper Lund scored 107 not out as Sudbrook launched an attack on the Sully bowling in the last 10 overs. Shae Ellis was the pick of the bowlers, ending with 3 for 34 - Sudbrook finished on 240 for 7.
The Sully response was barely off the ground when the wickets of Hugh Smith (3) and David Goodway (0) signalled that this was going to be a struggle. In spite of 25 for Nathan Gage, 26 for Dave Sylvester and a fine 32 from Darren Johnson the total was way below the target - Centurions finished on 183 for 9.
Sudbrook 240/7 Sully 183/9
Saved By the Rain
With defeat staring the 2nds in the face at Cardiff the rain came down and saved the day. Cardiff were well on top and Centurions were glad of the reprieve.
Another Slip-Up at Sully
The 2nds were on the wrong end of a losing draw at home against Newport. The visitors batted first and posted a useful 223/7. The response was not quite up to the mark as we finished on 198 for 9.
Defeat, in Spite of Digger's Heroics
The 2nds lost at home to Chepstow, in spite of a fantastic 109 from Nathan Gage. The Centurion total of 218 was nowhere near the Chepstow one of 313 for7.
P Bennett's 156 not out was the main feature of the visitors' innings, with John Gee bagging 2 for 52.
Unfortunately Centurions ended up 95 runs short

2nds Win Low Scoring Match
The seconds won this low scoring encounter with near neighbours Penarth at Burnham Avenue. Hugh Smith hit a solid 40, with Owain Lovering matching his score. Matthew Thomas hit a quick 27 before the end, but the total of only 160 looked to be easily gettable for Penarth.
The visitors’ reply was going well and they were cruising at 112 for 4 until Matthew Thomas and David Goodway came into the attack and ripped through the last 6 wickets for just 18 runs. Matthew posted the incredible figures of 4 for 6 off his three overs.

Defeat at Miskin
The 2nd XI were defeated at Miskin Manor in a game that they had to win to stand any realistic chance of ending in the same runners' up place they earned last year. The opposition batted first and made 246 all out. They were helped by several dropped catches and only the spell of bowling by John Gee in which he took 5 wickets (including a marvellous hat trick) gave Centurions anything to cheer about.
The batting was never up to scratch and the target was never in danger of being reached. Hugh Smith stuck around to hit a marathon 43 in 30 overs, but Sully were all out for 170.

Carnage at Burnham Avenue!
The seconds concluded their home programme with a massacre of a poor Usk side. Sully's innings was steady enough with contributions from young Aaron Smith, who hit 37 not out, Nathan Gage (36) and a quickfire 31 not out from the bionic man Ian Thickpenny. The final score of 214 for 7 whilst not being the biggest was certainly reasonable in the conditions.
Terry (dropped like a dog) Williams and Digger Gage ripped through the Usk batting and posted figures of 4 for 17 and 3 for 22 respectively. 15 year old Darren Johnson picked up a couple of wickets and took two catches as Usk disintegrated. Another youngster, Shae Ellis, also bagged a wicket and the visitors were all out for just 59. JOB DONE!

Defeat at St Fagans
The 2nd XI wound up the league season with a defeat at local rivals St Fagans. Batting first Centurions could only make 182 all out - top scorer being David Goodway with a 61 which would have come as a relief to him after his recent run of low scores.
The home side didn't falter in their task and reached the target for the loss of only 4 wickets. John Gee was once again the best bowler with figures of 3 for 17.
