Victory at Burnham Avenue

The 2nds got back to business at Sully with a victory in this exciting encounter with Bridgend.

The visitors batted first and were restricted to 170 all out - giving Centurions plenty of hope.  But the home side found the going just as tough as the visitors as they struggled to reach the target.  Rhett Jones led the way with 46, with some good support from Huw Williams, who scored 24 not out, but it was a huge six from Oz Bennett that won the game, in the 49th over.

Great Win at Sully

The 2nd XI batted first against Abergavenny on a hot day under clear blue skies and made the most of the conditions by racking up 234 for 5 at the end of the 50 overs.  Peter Holstrom hit 76 and Hugh Smith got 56 at the top of the order.  Rhett Jones (36) and Christian Bruce (26 not out) also chipped in with good scores.

The visitors' reply was close, but they were always behind the run rate. Wallace hit a gutsy 63 and Lilley 33 in their total

Stand in skipper John Gee grabbed a couple of wickets for Sully and occasional bowlers Rhett Jones (2 for 33) and  Sean Davies (3 for 38) helped to get the Panteg side all out for 201

Defeat At League Leaders

The 2nd XI travelled to table toppers Chepstow and came off second best, but were in a winning position, only to let it slip.

Chepstow batted first and were restricted to 150 for 9.  John Gee's marvellous 3 for 8 being the pick of the bowling figures.  Rhett Jones also made a rare appearance in the bowling department and came away with three wickets for 24.  Stead (41) and Dickinson (37) top scored for the home side.

Centurions' reply was going well, with Owain Lovering's 57 helping the visitors to a position of some strength.  But a late order collapse led to the final score of 125 all out.  King (4 for 13) and Thornhill, with 3 for 30, kept Chepstow on top.

Heavy Defeat at Burnham Avenue

On an overcast and blustery day things started badly for Sully when skipper Matt Thomas lost the toss and was asked to bat in bowler friendly conditions.

Hugh Smith and Steve Hood went in to face the new ball and put in an excellent performance to see off the opening attack of Newport and steadily make their way past the 50 mark.

Hood was first to go and Smith was joined at the crease by the returning Huw Williams. When Smith was next to fall for a well grafted 24, Sully were in an excellent position to post a formidable score against the title chasers at 91 for 2 from 24 overs. However, were it not for an excellent 57 from Huw Williams and a cameo 21 from skipper Thomas, Centurions may well have fallen for less than 100.

As it happened they managed to scrape their way to 149 all out after an excellent spell of spin bowling from Newport's Brown who ended with 5 for 16 from his 9 overs.

Newport's reply was immaculate. Their opening batsmen were by far the best Sully have come up against at this level. John Gee opened the bowling swinging the ball a long way and although he beat the bat regularly the openers gave little opportunity of a wicket.

There was one dropped catch and one very good lbw shout from Gee and he ended his spell with 0 for 24 from 8 overs.

Another dropped catch came from the bowling of Huw Williams who bowled 4 overs for 16; Lloyd Bruce bowled 5 overs for 21 and had an excellent run out shout turned down.

Skipper Thomas mixed the bowling regularly to try and get the required breakthrough but the batsmen always seemed up to the challenge.

Gareth Fiddler bowled well, with 23 runs coming from his 6 overs, and Ian Bennett bowled 4 overs for 27 with little luck.

There was an eventual breakthrough when Steve Hood was introduced into the attack, bowling Millichip for a superb 54. This was to be Sully's only wicket and the winning runs were hit in the 39th over by Hoskins, who ended on 63 not out to maintain Newport's title ambitions.
